Here’s how to tackle sustainability in the workplace.
Before you dive into lots of tools, strategy, and innovation for sustainability in the workplace, remember to take a breath and reflect on the right approach. There are competing forces to navigate, and finding the right balance may feel like walking a tightrope.

SLOW BUT STEADY.
Workplace sustainability is a big task – an important one, but still tough. Focus on continuous improvement, not looking for perfection overnight. Trying to do everything at once will feel impossible and may even make you want to quit. It is more important to find a maintainable pace where you can keep your efforts going long term.
BUT AIM BIG.
At the same time, the urgency of fighting climate change is real, and the level of change needed is massive. So be brave enough to aim big and keep coming back for more. Not every business is going to help drive the revolution we need, so those of us working on it need to do all we can.

DIPLOMACY IS KEY.
Remember, every workplace is different and you need to work within the workplace culture you have. Pay attention to your instincts when it comes to how you take action. Making enemies along the way will not serve your sustainability vision, so stay collaborative and remember not everyone is starting from the same level of understanding and urgency you are.
BUT DON’T WAIT UNTIL EVERYONE IS ONBOARD.
It’s a tricky balance to strike: be patient with people who are still learning about climate justice and its urgency, but be determined to make progress regardless. This means you stay determined to make progress even while some in your organization remain unconvinced. Don’t wait until everyone is onboard to start proposing changes and shaking things up.
You’re ready to go!
With these careful balancing acts in mind, you’re ready to start planning your first moves. If you’ve already covered the basics, you may be ready to start defining your eco strategy or using some eco innovation techniques.
Wishing you the best of luck on your journey with sustainability in the workplace!
